To change your Shopify theme safely, add the new theme as a draft, set it up and test it while your current theme stays live, then publish it. Your products and pages are not affected. Your theme settings and section content do not transfer, so that is where the real work is.

## What stays and what does not

This table sums up the [switching rules in Shopify’s Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/adding-themes).

| Stays the same | Must be redone in the new theme |
| --- | --- |
| Products | Section and block settings |
| Collections | Colors, fonts and other global settings |
| Menus | Text entered in the theme editor |
| Pages | Code customizations, including those added by apps |
| Blog posts | Theme templates |

## Step 1: list what your current theme does

Open your homepage, a collection, a product and the cart, and note everything you would miss: banners, announcement text, featured collections, review widgets, size charts, trust badges. Copy any text you wrote in the theme editor into a document. Take screenshots of each page, too. It takes a few minutes and saves a lot of guessing later.

## Step 2: back up your current theme

In **Online Store**, click the three-dot menu next to your theme, then **Duplicate**. Shopify creates a copy named “Copy of” followed by the theme’s name, as described in its [duplication guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/managing-themes/duplicating-themes). Publishing a new theme keeps the old one anyway, but a dated copy gives you a clean reference point.

## Step 3: add the new theme as a draft

Add a free theme with **Add**, or start a paid one with **Try theme**. It appears under **Draft themes**. A draft is invisible to your customers, so you can work on it for as long as you like. If you are still deciding, read [how to choose a Shopify theme](https://forgefont.com/blog/choose-a-shopify-theme) first.

## Step 4: rebuild your content in the draft

Click **Edit theme** next to the draft. Work from your list: logo and colors first, then the homepage sections, then the product and collection templates. Do not try to copy the old layout exactly. Use the new theme’s own sections, which is why you are switching.

## Step 5: reconnect your apps

This is the step people forget. Apps do not follow you automatically, because their theme code belongs to the old theme. [Shopify’s developer documentation](https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/online-store/theme-app-extensions/configuration) describes two cases:

- **App blocks** are added from the Apps section in the theme editor.
- **App embeds** are switched on under **Theme Settings** > **App embeds**.

Older apps may have inserted code directly into your theme. If one stops working, ask its developer how to install it in the new theme.

## Step 6: test before anyone else sees it

Follow our guide to [previewing an unpublished theme](https://forgefont.com/blog/preview-unpublished-shopify-theme), then go through the store like a customer:

- Open the homepage, a collection, a product and your policy pages.
- Choose a variant and check that the right image appears.
- Add to cart and go to checkout.
- Test the menu on a real phone.
- Submit the contact form.

## Step 7: publish, and keep the way back open

If it is a paid theme, buy it first, since you can only publish themes you own. Then go to **Online Store** and click **Publish** next to the draft. Per the [publishing guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/managing-themes/publishing-themes), your old theme moves to **Draft themes** with its changes intact, so you can publish it again if something goes wrong. Pick a quiet moment, then repeat the test from step 6 on the live store.

## A switch that leaves your store alone

Forgefont works the same careful way. Your new store arrives in a separate, unpublished theme, your live theme is neither changed nor replaced, and you review everything before choosing the day you switch. [Configure your store](https://forgefont.com/configurer) to see the price.

## Frequently asked questions

### Will changing my theme delete my products?

No. Shopify says products, collections, menus, pages and blog posts are not changed or deleted when you switch, because they are managed in the admin, not in the theme.

### Does my store go offline while I change themes?

Preparing a draft does not touch your live store. Visitors keep seeing the current theme until you click Publish.

### How many themes can I keep in Shopify?

Basic, Grow and Advanced plans can hold up to 20 themes, and Shopify Plus up to 100. At the limit, remove one first. Deleting is permanent, so download a theme you might want again.
