Build your Shopify store yourself if you have more time than budget and a simple catalog. Hire an expert if you need custom development, a complex migration or integrations with other systems. Shopify’s partner directory shows prices from a few dozen dollars to custom quotes, so compare what each price actually covers.

## What does a Shopify expert cost?

There is no fixed rate: you agree the price with each partner. On the first results page of [Shopify’s partner directory](https://www.shopify.com/partners/directory/services) in November 2026, starting prices ran from $30 to $1,000, and some listings showed ranges such as $20 to $399. Those figures are entry points, not the price of a store. The listings do not say what they include, and they tell you to contact the partner for pricing.

The directory lets you filter by price, location and service, and it groups partners into tiers (Select, Plus, Premier, Platinum) based on factors such as experience. You then contact the partner directly and agree the terms with them.

## How do the two options compare?

| | Build it yourself | Hire an expert |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cost of the build | Your Shopify plan and any theme or apps | The same, plus the quote |
| Your time | All of the work | Brief, feedback and content |
| Custom code | Limited to what you can learn | Available |
| What you learn | How your store works | Depends on the handover |
| Who writes the content | You | Often still you, unless it is in the quote |

The last row surprises people. Unless the quote says otherwise, an expert will still ask you for your product facts and photos. Our estimate of [how long a store takes to build](https://forgefont.com/blog/how-long-to-build-a-shopify-store) shows why content is where the hours go.

## When is building it yourself the better choice?

- Your catalog is small and your products are simple.
- A standard theme does what you need.
- You want to understand your store, because you will run it every day.
- You are testing an idea and do not know yet if it will sell.

The total for this route is the running budget in our article on [what a Shopify store costs](https://forgefont.com/blog/how-much-does-a-shopify-store-cost).

## When is hiring an expert worth it?

- You need a custom app or a link to another system, such as a warehouse or accounting tool.
- You are moving an established store and must keep customers, order history and search traffic.
- You sell wholesale or across several countries, with rules that do not fit a standard setup.
- Your brand needs a design that no theme can reach.
- You have already tried, and a specific problem is blocking you.

In these cases, a quote is usually money well spent. Forgefont is not a replacement here: custom apps and integrations are not part of what it delivers.

## What should you ask before you sign?

1. What exactly is delivered, and what is not? Ask for a written list of pages and features.
2. How many rounds of revisions are included, and what does one more cost?
3. Who writes the text and supplies the photos?
4. Which paid apps does the build rely on, and what do they cost each month?
5. Will I be able to edit everything myself afterwards?
6. Can I see stores you built that are still live? Check them on a phone.

## Is there a middle option?

Yes, if your need is a complete, standard store and you simply do not want to build it page by page or brief an agency. Forgefont builds the whole store from your products and photos for $69, $119 or $149, paid once, with your Shopify plan paid separately. The theme stays unpublished until you approve it, and you can edit it in the Shopify editor. [Compare the plans](https://forgefont.com/#forfaits) and weigh them against the quotes you receive.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I fire an expert and keep my store?

The store is on your Shopify account, so make sure it stays that way. Create the account yourself, and give the expert access rather than letting them own the store.

### Can I hire an expert just for one task?

Yes. Shopify’s directory lists separate services such as theme customization, store migration, product photography and SEO, so you do not have to buy a full build.

### Will a Shopify expert get me more sales?

Nobody can promise that. Be careful with any quote that guarantees a revenue figure or a Google ranking. Ask for the specific work that will be delivered instead.
