How long does it take to build a Shopify store?

By the Forgefont team · Published

There is no standard time to build a Shopify store, because it depends on your catalog. Opening the account takes minutes. A small store usually takes days of work, not hours, and most of that goes to photos and product text. Domain setup can add up to 48 hours, and Google can take weeks to notice you.

Where does the time actually go?

The technical setup is the short part. The content is the long part, and only you know how ready yours is.

TaskWhat decides how long it takes
PhotosWhether they exist already, and how many products you have
Product pagesNumber of products and variants, and how much you know about each
Theme and homepageHow long you hesitate. Comparing themes can absorb days
Pages and policiesWhether your shipping and return terms are already decided
Collections and menusUsually quick once the products are in
Payments, shipping, taxesThe countries you sell to and the rules that apply there

How can you estimate your own build time?

Time yourself on one product, from raw photos to a finished page, then multiply. The figures below are an illustration, not a measurement: they assume 30 minutes per product, and your own number may be quite different.

ProductsTime at 30 minutes each
52.5 hours
2010 hours
5025 hours

Then add the time for your theme, your pages and your settings. Count these as work on your first store, when you are also learning where everything is. If you can only give it an hour each weekday evening, 10 hours means two weeks on the calendar.

What can you not speed up?

What slows most first stores down?

  1. Starting with the design. A theme looks different with your real photos. Add your products first.
  2. Writing pages one at a time without a model. Finish one page properly, then reuse its structure. This guide to Shopify product pages gives you that structure.
  3. Leaving decisions open. Return terms and shipping rates are business decisions. No tool makes them for you.
  4. Treating launch as a finish line. You can add products after going live. Once the order path works, launch.

The order that avoids the most rework is in our guide on how to start a Shopify store, and the launch checklist tells you when you are ready.

How does Forgefont change the timeline?

With Forgefont, gathering your content stays your job, and it is often the longest part. If your photos are not good enough, Clipscale makes studio images and product videos from one product photo. Connecting Shopify takes about ten minutes, with a guide. Once your content is in, the build runs on its own and you follow each step in your account. Nothing is published until you decide. See the plans to find the one that fits your product count.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a Shopify store in one day?

With one or two products and all your photos, text and terms ready, it is possible for the store itself. A connected domain may still need up to 48 hours to go fully live, according to Shopify.

Is the Shopify trial long enough to finish?

The free part lasts three days, followed by $1 a month for three months as of November 2026. Three days is short for a first store, so plan on building during the $1 period.

Should I wait until every product is ready before launching?

No. You can launch with your best products and add the others afterwards. What should be finished is the path to buying: pages, payments, shipping and a test order.
