To connect Google Search Console to Shopify, add your domain as a URL prefix property, paste Google’s HTML tag into your theme’s `theme.liquid` file, click Verify, then submit `sitemap.xml`. The whole setup uses no app. Your store must be out of private mode while you do it.

## Before you start

- **A Google account** to sign in to Search Console.
- **Your final domain.** Use the one customers see, with `https://`. If you plan to connect a custom domain, do that first.
- **Private mode off.** [Shopify explains](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/seo/find-site-map) that Google cannot read your sitemap while private mode is on. Our guide on [removing the Shopify password](https://forgefont.com/blog/remove-shopify-password) covers this.

## Step 1: add your store and copy the tag

1. In Search Console, open the menu and select **Add property**.
2. Choose **URL prefix** and enter your domain, including `https://`.
3. In **Verify ownership**, select **HTML tag** and copy the full meta tag, including the opening and closing angle brackets.

## Step 2: paste the tag in your theme

1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store**.
2. Open the actions menu of your live theme and click **Edit code**.
3. Under **Layout**, open `theme.liquid`.
4. Paste the tag on a blank line directly below the opening `<head>` tag.
5. Click **Save**.

Change nothing else in this file. A title or heading can go missing after theme edits, so paste the tag and leave the rest as it is.

## Step 3: verify

Go back to Search Console and click **Verify**. If you get an error, Shopify suggests waiting 15 minutes and trying again.

## Step 4: submit your sitemap

Shopify generates your sitemap for you, at the root of your domain, and updates it when you add products, collections, pages or blog posts.

1. In Search Console, go to **Indexing**, then **Sitemaps**.
2. Under **Add a new sitemap**, enter `sitemap.xml`.
3. Click **Submit**.

If you use international domains, verify each one, with each tag on its own line in `theme.liquid`, and submit a sitemap for each.

## What should you look at first?

Google needs time to crawl your store, so do not expect full reports on day one. These are the reports to learn, based on [Google’s getting started page](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/monitor-debug/search-console-start):

| Report or tool | The question it answers |
| --- | --- |
| Page Indexing report | Which pages are in Google, which are excluded, and why? |
| URL Inspection tool | What is the status of this page? Can I ask for a crawl? |
| Performance report | Which searches show my store, and how often do people click? |
| Core Web Vitals report | How do real visitors experience my pages? |
| Manual Actions report | Has Google applied a manual action to my site? |

The Performance report is the one you will return to. Its Queries tab shows the terms you already appear for, which is a good starting point for [keyword research on a small store](https://forgefont.com/blog/shopify-keyword-research).

## What happens if you change theme?

The tag sits in a file of the theme you edited, and each theme has its own files. Before you publish a new theme, paste the same tag into its `theme.liquid`, so the tag stays on your live store.

This applies to a Forgefont store too. The Forgefont theme is installed in your store and you can edit it like any other theme, so you add the tag the same way before you publish. If your store is not built yet, you can [configure it here](https://forgefont.com/configurer) and come back to this tutorial once it is live.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Google Search Console free?

Yes. Search Console is a free Google tool. It shows how Google crawls and indexes your store and how your pages perform in Search.

### How often should I check Search Console?

You do not need to sign in every day. Google says it emails you about new issues and suggests checking about once a month, or after you change your site’s content.

### Does my store need Search Console to appear on Google?

No. Google can find your pages without it, and it says a sitemap is optional. Search Console is how you see what Google found and spot errors.
