Shopify recommends 2048 x 2048 pixels for square product images. Each file must stay under 20 MB. Shopify’s documents give different pixel limits, so stay at or below 4472 x 4472 pixels, or 20 megapixels, and you are within all of them. Use the same ratio across your products.

## Product image limits at a glance

These figures come from Shopify’s [product media types](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types) page, its [developer documentation](https://shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/product-merchandising/products-and-collections/manage-media) and its guide to [adding media](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/add-media), as of November 2026.

| Item | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Recommended square size | 2048 x 2048 px |
| Maximum file size | Under 20 MB |
| Maximum dimensions | 5000 x 5000 px or 25 MP in the Help Center; 4472 x 4472 px or 20 MP in the developer docs |
| Aspect ratio | 100:1 to 1:100 |
| Main formats | PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC, GIF |
| Media per product | Up to 250 images, videos or 3D models |

The two maximums do not match, which is why the lower figure is the safer one. To work out megapixels, multiply width by height and divide by one million. A 4000 x 4000 pixel photo is 16 megapixels.

## Does the image have to be exactly 2048 pixels?

No. It is a recommendation, not a rule. Shopify resizes images for each device, but it can only go down: the [image_url filter](https://shopify.dev/docs/api/liquid/filters/image_url) cannot make an image larger than its original. So a bigger original gives your theme more to work with, and a tiny one stays tiny.

## Which ratio should you pick?

Pick one and keep it. The first image of each product becomes its featured image, which appears on collection pages, in the cart and at checkout. If some are square and others tall, rows look uneven. Square is the easy default. A portrait ratio suits clothing and other tall products, if your theme displays it well, so preview before you commit.

## What size should banners and slideshows be?

There is no universal number, because the shape depends on your theme and on the section. Shopify’s [theme image guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/images/theme-images) gives these rules instead:

- Stay within 20 MB and 20 megapixels.
- Match the image ratio to the section’s image area, to limit cropping.
- Set a focal point, if your theme supports it, so the subject stays in frame.
- Keep text out of the image. Add it in the theme editor, so it stays readable and editable.

Wide images can lose their sides on tall screens, and tall images can lose their top and bottom on wide screens. Check both views in the theme editor.

## Which format should you use?

For product photos, Shopify’s pages differ slightly. One names PNG first, followed by JPEG, while others advise JPEG for photos and PNG for transparency. In practice, JPEG suits ordinary photographs and PNG suits logos and images that need a transparent background. Shopify then serves a format suited to each visitor’s browser, such as WebP or AVIF, so you do not need to convert anything yourself. Our guide to [optimizing Shopify images](https://forgefont.com/blog/optimize-shopify-images) covers what you do need to do.

One detail for careful editors: Shopify removes color profiles and assumes sRGB, so export in sRGB if your colors matter.

## Video and 3D limits

Product videos can run up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, at up to 4K (4096 x 2160 px), in MP4, MOV or WebM. 3D models use GLB or USDZ, up to 500 MB. Your theme must support them for them to appear.

Forgefont takes your photos in JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 20 MB each, then checks them and places them in your store with [alt text for each image](https://forgefont.com/blog/shopify-image-alt-text). [Configure your store](https://forgefont.com/configurer) to see the exact price for your catalog.

## Frequently asked questions

### What happens if my photo is smaller than 2048 pixels?

It will still upload. Shopify cannot resize an image beyond its original dimensions, though, so a small file may look soft on a large screen. Use the largest original you have.

### Do product images have to be square?

No. Shopify accepts ratios from 100:1 to 1:100. Square is simply the shape Shopify gives a recommended size for, and it is an easy way to keep a collection page tidy.

### Can I upload photos straight from my phone?

Yes. Shopify lists HEIC among its accepted formats, along with PNG, JPEG and WebP. Check that the file is under 20 MB.
