Launch a Shopify store
Which Shopify plan should you choose?
For most new stores, the Basic plan is the right choice: $39 a month, or $29 a month billed yearly, as of November 2026. Move up to Grow when you need staff accounts or when your sales volume makes the lower fees worth more than the higher plan price.
What does each plan cost and include?
These figures come from Shopify’s pricing page as of November 2026, in US dollars. Check the page before you commit, because they change.
| Detail | Basic | Grow | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per month, billed yearly | $29 | $79 | $299 |
| Per month, billed monthly | $39 | $105 | $399 |
| Additional staff accounts | None | 5 | 15 |
| Standard online card rate | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2.7% + 30¢ | 2.5% + 30¢ |
| Fee with a third-party payment provider | 2% | 1% | 0.6% |
| Third-party shipping rates | Not included | Add-on | Included |
| Support | Live chat | Live chat | Enhanced live chat |
The same page lists Plus from $2,300 a month. It is aimed at much larger businesses, so a new store can ignore it.
What does not change between the three plans?
Several things people expect to pay for are the same on Basic, Grow and Advanced, according to the same pricing page: 10 inventory locations, shipping discounts of up to 87%, and the listed reports. If one of these is your reason for upgrading, look again before you pay more.
When does a higher plan pay for itself?
A higher plan only saves money if the lower fees beat the extra monthly cost. Here is the math with yearly billing and the rates above. The 30¢ per order is the same on all three, so it does not affect the result.
| Move | Extra cost per month | Break-even with Shopify’s card rate | Break-even with a third-party provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic to Grow | $50 | $25,000 in monthly sales | $5,000 in monthly sales |
| Grow to Advanced | $220 | $110,000 in monthly sales | $55,000 in monthly sales |
With Shopify’s card rate, Basic to Grow saves 0.2% of sales, so $50 divided by 0.002 gives $25,000. With a third-party provider, it saves one point of Shopify’s fee, so $50 divided by 0.01 gives $5,000. Your own numbers will differ if most of your sales use another rate, so treat these as a guide.
Which plan fits your situation?
- You have no sales yet. Choose Basic. A store with no orders saves nothing from lower rates.
- You run the store alone. Stay on Basic until the fees justify a move.
- Others need their own login. Grow is the first plan with additional staff accounts.
- You must keep a third-party payment provider. Run the $5,000 test above. You may reach Grow sooner.
- You need carrier rates calculated at checkout by a third party. Compare the Grow add-on with Advanced, where this is included.
Monthly or yearly billing?
Yearly billing lowers the cost by $120 a year on Basic, $312 on Grow and $1,200 on Advanced. Monthly billing costs more but commits you to less. If you are still testing whether your products sell, starting monthly is a reasonable choice. Shopify notes that switching from annual to monthly billing might mean losing features or benefits included with an annual plan.
The plan is only one line in your budget. See what a Shopify store costs in total, including apps, theme and photos.
Plan first, then launch
You need a paid plan before you can remove the store password and take orders, so this choice comes early in your launch checklist.
Your Shopify plan and the build of the store are two separate costs. You pay Shopify directly for the plan. Forgefont builds the store from your products and photos for a one-time payment of $69, $119 or $149. You can configure your store to see the exact price with your options.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my Shopify plan later?
Yes, from Settings > Plan in your admin. An upgrade takes effect immediately. A downgrade takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle, because plans are paid in advance.
Is there a free Shopify plan for an online store?
Shopify lists an Agentic plan at $0 a month for selling in AI channels, as of November 2026. It lets you build and preview an online store, but publishing the store and accepting online store orders requires a paid plan.
Does a higher plan give me more inventory locations?
Not between Basic, Grow and Advanced. Shopify’s pricing page lists 10 inventory locations on all three, as of November 2026. Plus lists 200.
