What makes a good ecommerce homepage

By the Forgefont team · Published

A good ecommerce homepage tells a new visitor three things within seconds: what you sell, why they should trust you and where to click next. It does not need to show everything. Its job is to send each person to the right collection or product, with enough proof to make them stay.

The first screen does most of the work

Before anyone scrolls, the first screen must answer one question: am I in the right place? Three elements do that job.

Keep the headline out of the image itself. Shopify advises adding text in the theme editor and using simple images, so the words stay readable on every screen size.

A quick test: show the first screen to someone for a few seconds, then hide it and ask what you sell. If they cannot say, change the headline before anything else.

What comes next, in order

This order works for most small stores. It follows a visitor’s questions, from “what is this?” to “can I trust it?”.

  1. Categories or best sellers. Give people a way in. With few products, show them directly.
  2. What makes you different. Two or three specific lines about your materials, your process or your story.
  3. Proof. Real customer reviews, press mentions or the number of years you have traded, only if they are true.
  4. Practical reassurance. Shipping, returns and contact, in a few words with links to the full pages.
  5. A short FAQ. The questions you get most often, written in full.

Each block should earn its place. Our guide to product pages covers where the detail belongs, since a homepage only has to get visitors there.

How should a homepage adapt to your catalog?

Your storeWhat the homepage should do
One productWork like a sales page: benefit, photos, proof, price, button
A few productsShow them all, with a line on each
Several categoriesLead with categories, then best sellers
Large catalogMake search and the menu obvious, and feature current collections

What should you leave out?

Check it on a phone last

A section that looks balanced on a laptop can turn into a long scroll on a phone. In the theme editor, use the mobile button to preview your homepage, then open it on a real device. Our guide to mobile-first Shopify design goes further.

A homepage written for your brand

Forgefont composes your homepage from what you tell it about your brand: 5 to 9 sections, such as a hero, a brand statement, featured products and an FAQ, in your colors. Nothing is invented, and you can edit it all in the Shopify editor. See the plans for what each one includes.

Frequently asked questions

How many sections should a homepage have?

There is no fixed number. Keep a section only if it helps a visitor decide or find something. A small store can do the job with four or five.

Should I use a slideshow on my homepage?

One strong image is usually the simpler choice. It makes you pick your main message, and Shopify lists carousels among the features that can affect store speed.

Do I need a homepage if most visitors land on product pages?

Yes. A visitor who likes a product may want to know who is behind it, and the homepage is the natural place to find out. It is also a likely landing page for anyone who searches for your brand name.
