Mobile-first design for Shopify stores

By the Forgefont team · Published

Mobile-first design means planning your Shopify store for a phone, then adapting it to a larger screen, not the reverse. Google uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking, and many shoppers will meet your store on a small screen. Check every page there before you check it on a laptop.

What does Google expect on mobile?

Under mobile-first indexing, Google crawls your site with a smartphone agent. It recommends responsive design and asks that the mobile page carry the same main content as the desktop one, including the same alt text. Collapsing text into dropdowns is fine. Removing it is not.

Speed is measured on its own for phones. Core Web Vitals are segmented by mobile and desktop, with these “good” targets: LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 ms or less, CLS of 0.1 or less. A good score helps the experience, but Google is clear that it does not guarantee a ranking.

Walk through the store, screen by screen

A good way to review mobile design is to follow a shopper’s path. Here is what to look for at each stop.

How big should buttons be?

web.dev recommends tap targets of about 48 device-independent pixels, spaced about 8 pixels apart. A 24-pixel icon is fine if padding brings its tap area up to 48. If your theme’s swatches or quantity buttons feel fiddly, this is usually why.

Three mobile mistakes to avoid

  1. Pop-ups that cover the screen. On a phone, a sign-up dialog can fill the whole view. Google suggests small banners as an alternative. Delay it, or replace it with a banner.
  2. Stacked sticky bars. An announcement bar, a header and a chat bubble can leave little room for the product.
  3. Heavy media at the top. The first screen sets the loading time your visitors feel. Our tutorial on optimizing Shopify images explains what to do.

How to test it

  1. In the theme editor, click the mobile button in the menu bar for a first look, as shown in the editor overview.
  2. Open the store on a real phone, one hand only, and try to buy something.
  3. Ask someone who has never seen the store to do the same, and watch without helping.
  4. After launch, follow the LCP, INP and CLS reports in Analytics > Reports.

Built for the phone in your customer’s hand

A Forgefont store includes a header menu on desktop and a side menu on mobile that lead to every page, and you can preview it all like a shopper before anything goes live. Compare the plans to see what is included.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know how many of my visitors use a phone?

Check your own numbers. Shopify’s web performance reports show online visitor sessions by device type, and that figure matters more for you than any general average.

Do I need a separate mobile version of my store?

No. Google recommends responsive design, where one page adapts to the screen, as the easiest pattern to maintain. Check your theme’s mobile layout rather than building a second site.

Can I hide some content on mobile to shorten the page?

You can reorganize it, but keep the same main content. Google says accordions and tabs are fine, while a mobile page with less content can lose traffic.
