How to choose a Shopify theme

By the Forgefont team · Published

The best Shopify theme is the one that fits your catalog size, suits your photos, includes the features you need and stays easy for you to edit. No single theme is best for everyone. Start with a free theme, try it with your own products, and pay only if something is really missing.

Where to look

The Shopify Theme Store is the place to begin. As of November 2026, it lists 24 free themes and 1,335 paid ones. Its filters let you narrow the list by price, industry, catalog size and features. Then run the six checks below on two or three candidates, not on the whole list.

Check 1: does it fit your catalog size?

The filter separates small catalogs from very large ones, and the difference is real. A store with 3 products needs room to tell each product’s story. A store with 500 needs search, filters and a menu that scales. Choose for the catalog you will have next year, not the largest one you can imagine.

Check 2: does it suit your photos?

Demos use professional images, often in matching tones. If a theme relies on full-screen pictures and yours are phone photos on a white background, the result will look nothing like the demo. Picture your own images in the layout. Better yet, test them, as check 5 explains.

Check 3: does it have the features you need?

Write down the three to five features you actually need, before you browse. For most stores, the list comes from this kind of question:

If you sellLook for
Products in several colorsColor swatches
Many categoriesMega menu, filtering and sorting
Clothing or anything with sizesSize charts
Products that need a demonstrationProduct video
Items that often sell outBack-in-stock alerts, pre-orders

Compare the features listed on each theme’s page with your list. Ignore the rest: an unused feature is not a reason to pay. Our comparison of free and paid Shopify themes helps if a paid theme is tempting.

Check 4: who maintains it?

On a theme’s page, look at the developer, the last update and the reviews. Read the negative reviews too, especially those about support. Paid themes are supported by their developers, not by Shopify, so this is the team you will depend on if something breaks. The theme support page explains who helps with what.

Check 5: try it with your own content

You can add a free theme to your store as a draft, and you can try a paid one before buying it. Shopify’s guide shows the steps: click Add or Try theme on the theme’s page, then find it under Draft themes in Online Store. Your live store does not change. Our tutorial on previewing an unpublished theme covers the next step.

Upload a real product, your real logo and one real banner. This takes less time than reading another comparison, and it shows you what the demo hides.

Check 6: open it on a phone

Look at the menu, the product gallery and the add-to-cart button on an actual phone. A theme that looks elegant on a laptop can feel cramped on a small screen. Our guide to mobile-first design for Shopify lists what to look for.

Common traps

Or skip the search

Choosing and setting up a theme is often the slowest part of a launch. Forgefont takes a different route: it builds a custom Forgefont theme in your colors, with your products and photos already in place, and you edit it in the Shopify editor like any other theme. Compare the plans if that suits you better than a template.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my theme later?

Yes. Your products, collections, menus, pages and blog posts stay in place when you switch themes. Your theme settings and section content do not carry over, so plan some setup time.

Which themes can I use on the Starter plan?

Shopify’s Help Center says the Starter plan is limited to the Spotlight theme. Basic, Grow and Advanced plans can hold up to 20 themes in the library.

Should I pick a theme made for my industry?

Use it as a starting point, not a requirement. Industry labels mostly describe the demo. A theme tagged for another sector can suit you well if its layout fits your products.
