Shopify themes and design
Free or paid Shopify theme: what is the difference?
A free Shopify theme costs nothing and is enough for most new stores. A paid theme costs a one-off fee, $170 to $500 in the Theme Store as of November 2026, and may add features or a look you would otherwise need apps or a developer for. The main differences are features, support and price.
Side by side
Figures come from the Shopify Theme Store and Shopify’s Help Center, as of November 2026.

What do you actually get for the money?
Mainly features and a particular design. Some paid themes include specific tools or layouts that a free theme lacks, and each Theme Store page lists them. But a higher price does not mean a better store. Free themes already cover a lot: every one of them in the Theme Store is listed with a mega menu and a sticky header, for example, and most with color swatches.
The fair test is your own list. If a free theme covers your needs, a paid theme gives you nothing you will use. Our guide on how to choose a Shopify theme shows how to write that list.
How does support differ?
This difference is easy to miss. According to Shopify’s theme support page:
- Free themes from Shopify: Shopify Support may help with certain predefined customizations, and stores on Basic or higher get up to 60 minutes of free design support. Support does not write custom code.
- Paid themes: the developer provides support, not Shopify. You reach them from the theme in your admin. Developers do not provide customizations, so larger changes mean hiring a Shopify Partner.
In short, buying a theme does not buy you custom work. Read recent reviews about support before paying.
Rules to know before you buy
From Shopify’s guide to adding themes:
- You can try up to 19 paid themes at once. Trial themes carry a Theme trial label.
- You can customize a trial theme in the editor, and your changes are kept if you buy it. You cannot edit its code.
- You can only publish a theme you have purchased.
- The purchase is licensed to one store and is final sale.
When a free theme is the better choice
- You are launching and have not made a sale yet.
- You have few products and a simple catalog.
- You would rather put the budget into photos, which buyers see first.
When a paid theme is worth it
- A specific feature you need is built in, and the alternative is a monthly app.
- Your store is already selling and the design holds you back.
- You love a design, you have tried it with your own products, and you can check that its developer is active.
Add up the numbers if you are comparing with apps: a one-off theme price against an app’s monthly fee over two years, for instance. Our page on what a Shopify store costs helps you place that in the whole budget.
A third option: a finished store
Free and paid themes share one trait: they arrive empty, and you do the setup. Forgefont builds a custom theme in your colors with your pages already written and your photos in place, for $69 to $149, paid once, with your Shopify plan paid separately. If you enjoy building and have the time, a free theme is the cheaper path. If you would rather review a finished store, compare the three plans.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move from a free theme to a paid one later?
Yes. Your products, collections, menus and pages stay where they are. You will need to redo the theme settings and section content in the new theme.
Can I use a paid theme on a second store?
A purchased theme is licensed to the store where you bought it. Shopify says transfers may be possible if you are eligible, so check before you count on it.
Can I get a refund on a paid theme?
Plan on no. Shopify says theme purchases are final sale and developers cannot provide refunds. That is the reason to use the free trial properly before you buy.
